A Death in Canada

“They’re going to kill someone” I had said to McMurfee, during one of our meetings after I realized I’d been TEASER-ed. “They’re using these things with no training. They deny using them at all. They could have killed me.”

“You’ve got no proof they TEASER-ed you. It’s your word against theirs. They’ll win.” McMurfee countered.

“The next door neighbor saw it! I have the holes in my shirt and the burn marks on my back.”

“You have pictures, but the marks are fading, almost already gone. You could’ve poked those holes in your shirt yourself. The word of a nine year old girl wouldn’t hold much weight in court; whether you have a Jury Trial or a Bench Trial by just the Judge.”

He was probably right, but I was right, too. Not long after this conversation, a man in Canada was killed when several police officers tackled and TEASER-ed him.

The story made international news. A Polish man flew from Poland to British Columbia, Canada to visit his mother. After several hours going through customs and immigration, he became frustrated and agitated. Airport workers couldn’t understand his language, and called the police. The police tackled and TEASER-ed him within a minute of their arrival. They continued to TEASER him after dogpiling him on the floor. He screamed in anguish and died of a heart attack: TEASER-ed five times while handcuffed and pressed down on the floor by four Royal Mounted Canadian Police.
